Replacing the bath with a shower
To replace a bath with a shower you swap a tub for a tray or a level floor, and with it the plumbing, waterproofing and sometimes the electrics. Check the grant and VAT position before any work begins.1

What can a small room fit?
In a room like this the bath takes up the whole end. A shower tray is shorter, so it frees floor, but the toilet and basin will still be close. Measure the clear space someone needs to stand, turn and, if relevant, use a seat.
The hand shower on the bath shows the pipework is already there. Whether it can be reused depends on valve type and the water supply, a question for a competent plumber. In an existing home a mixing valve is not required by law, though the Part G FAQ says people may want to consider the safety benefits.7

Why do old trays get grimy?
Seams and ridges hold soap, skin and moisture, so mould follows. A ridged floor grips a foot but is harder to clean. Mould in a bathroom can harm airways and lungs, and affects people with asthma or weak immune systems more.5
If a new shower is going in, ask for a smooth, easy-clean tray and a working extractor fan. In England, Approved Document F sets extract rates for new work.8

Does a shower with a raised tray still have a step?
Yes. A tray raised off the floor keeps a step, and if the drain sits under the tray the floor may need cutting to lower it. Age UK says a Disabled Facilities Grant may fund a level-access shower, and one with a seat.2
VAT is another point: work to a bathroom can be zero-rated where it is necessary to suit a disabled person. HMRC says that does not cover an elderly person who is not disabled or chronically sick.3 Written declarations are needed.

Is a long bathroom easy to adapt?
A long room gives space at one end, but a door at the other can mean a long walk with wet feet over lino. A patterned lino floor may hide worn patches and lifting joins.
Check the ceiling before work: if the home was built or refurbished before 2000, textured coatings may contain asbestos, and the HSE says to tell builders before work begins.6 Any new light or fan near the shower is electrical work in a special location and needs a registered electrician.4
Do it yourself or get it fitted
Do these first
- Apply for any grant before work starts: you might not get one if you start work first.1
- Ask for quotes that spell out plumbing, waterproofing, tiling and electrics.
- If you rent, ask the landlord before changing anything.
Limescale and shower fittings
Shower trims at PlumbingSupplyAndMore and the SoftPro Eco water softener at SoftPro are sold by American stores with the same owners as this site, shown as a US reference for what the parts look like, with no promise of shipping to the UK. Hard water can scale new shower fittings, but these are not a UK recommendation.
Also asked
How long does it take to replace a bath with a shower?
No figure is given here. It depends on the plumbing, the floor and whether the room is tiled again. Ask the fitter for a written programme, including what happens to the bathroom while the work goes on.
Can you replace a bath with a shower yourself?
The plumbing and waterproofing are for a competent plumber, and any new electrics belong with a registered electrician. In England and Wales, alterations in the zones around a shower are notifiable.4 If you rent, ask the landlord first.
