The shower, pictured

A level access shower has no step to climb over, which is why it is often the first change people picture. Look at what you step over and sit on now, then compare it with the four ways below.1

Four ways to change how you shower

Start with the room and the person

The room above has an enclosure with a threshold, a bath beside it and two separate taps. Which change helps depends on the person's legs, balance and routine, and on the room's floor and drain. A Disabled Facilities Grant in England can fund a level-access or wet-room shower, a shower with a seat, and a wider bathroom, although the council must agree the work is necessary and appropriate.21 Do not start work before approval, because you might get no grant.2 An occupational therapist can advise before any money is spent.
